The interior of the animals is particularly influenced by the The Arts and Crafts Movements and the Japanese printmakers of the Ukiyo-e period.

In Rudyard Kipling's Just So Story How The Elephant Got His Trunk, the elephant has a small nose until his curiosity about what the crocodile has for dinner leads him to the Limpopo River, where he discoveres that the crocodile feasts on baby elephants! The crocodile bites him on the nose and in his struggle to escape the elephant stretches his nose into a trunk.
