Daniel Mackie takes his inspiration from art forms such as Art Deco, Egyptian tomb painting, Impressionism and Japanese prints, along with his love of mythology and Aesop's Fables. The interior of the animals is particularly influenced by the The Arts and Crafts Movements and the Japanese printmakers of the Ukiyo-e period.

Doggy Paddle was the first swimming stroke used by early humans. It is believed to have been learned by observing animals swim. Prehistoric cave paintings in Egypt show figures doing what appeares to be the dog paddle.
